Lee Road Roundabout 2018 Construction Project

Overview
  General Information

   Location: At Whitmore Lake Road

  Township: Green Oak Township

  Beginning: June 18, 2018

  Completion: August 1, 2018

Description: Reduce existing roundabout from 3-lanes to 2-lanes

Impact: Major - Daytime and nighttime closures

Funding Source(s): Livingston County Road Commission and State

Project Background
The LCRC has been monitoring operations of the Lee Road roundabouts since they were built.  They have worked well to process large traffic volumes safely.  There are few injury accidents, but there has been a nagging persistence of “fender-benders” in the Whitmore Lake roundabout. This is the largest roundabout and has 3 circulating lanes.  The crashes generally involved someone turning from the wrong lane and cutting off another driver.  We worked with design experts to revise the number of lanes and to improve and refresh signs and pavement markings.

Updates
June 15, 2018

Monday June 25, 2018, road work will begin on Lee Road Roundabout project.  Cadillac Asphalt LLC is the prime contractor.  The majority of the work consists of removing pavement and concrete curb and gutter, placing new concrete curb and gutter, mill the existing asphalt and repaving. The project will be done in three phases and will consist of daytime and nighttime work.

Phase I – June 25 to July 3, 2018
Work during this phase will concentrate on west side of Whitmore Lake Road north of the roundabouts.  The contractor will be removing a portion of the roadway and replacing curb and gutter near Old Lee Road.  Old Lee Road at Whitmore Lake Road will be closed but traffic impacts on Whitmore Lake Road should be minimal.

Phase II – July 9 to July 24, 2018
During this phase the westerly roundabout at Whitmore Lake Road will be closed to traffic.  Detours will be provided.  The contractor will be reconstructing curb and gutter, the central island and splitter islands.  The southbound US-23 exit ramp will be open and motorists will be able to exit, however they will only be allowed to travel northbound onto Whitmore Lake Road or east over the US-23 bridge.

Phase III – July 25 to August3, 2018
Work includes milling and replacing the existing asphalt of the west roundabout and middle roundabout.  This work will be done under nighttime closures between the hours of 9PM and 6AM.

Phase IIIA –Close all movements (Lee Road from the east and west and the SB US-23 ramp) in and out of the middle roundabout for 2 consecutive nights during phase III work.

Detour routes will be posted in accordance with the map linked here.

Access to and from US-23 east of Whitmore Lake will be maintained during daytime operations.  The southbound US-23 ramp to northbound Whitmore Lake Roads also will remain open.  There will be evening closures for paving operations towards the end of July.

The entire project, including permanent signing, pavement marking and restoration will be completed by August 17, 2018.
