Permit Office Overview

The Permits Office processes several types of permits. A permit is required any time you perform work within the road right of way (MCL 224.19). This includes permits for driveways, road approaches, utility construction and etc. Additionally, any oversize or overweight loads or vehicles require a special permit from the Road Commission available through Oxcart.

Transportation Permits

We are excited to partner with Oxcart to improve our transportation-related permitting process beginning on April 4, 2020. Oxcart is an online permit system that can be accessed from any computer or hand-held device with an internet or cellular connection.  The Oxcart permit system will provide better tracking and monitoring of your applications and permits. It will eliminate some of the issues with getting permits back to you once they are approved. You’ll also be able to access your permit history from your account at any time.

The online permit system can be accessed at www.oxcartpermits.com. Once you have set up an account and submitted your profile information, you will be able to insert information for each of your trucks. Your truck information will be stored in your account and can be selected for any permit with the click of a button.

When you submit a permit application and with the correct language with regard to the LCRC being additional insured, Oxcart will collect our permit fee, along with a small convenience fee for the online payment. The Road Commission is notified electronically when you submit a permit application and the fee is paid. As soon as we have reviewed and approve your application, a permit is automatically sent to you.

If we do not have your current insurance on file we may deny your request to move. If you are not sure if we have your current insurance on file please send it to avoid delay with your permit.  You may also send a copy of your Liability containing the correct language with regard to the LCRC being additional insured to us via email or fax. Our fax number is 517-546-9628; email to permits@livingstonroads.org .  For a sample of our insurance with the required wording, click here.

We will be implementing the Oxcart permit process on April 4, 2020.  If you have any questions about this process, please contact our permits department at (517) 546-4250 or at permits@livingstonroads.org

LIVINGSTON COUNTY PERMIT GUIDEBOOK (2013)

Most often the initial contact any resident, developer or builder has with the regulatory process occurs when a development is still an idea. At this initial stage in the decision process, specific information on permits and regulations is critical for determining whether or not to commit time and money to a development.

Information is needed in order to test the feasibility of a particular course of action.  Does the development conform to the local zoning ordinance?  What permits are required?  How long will it take to get the permits?  How much do the permits cost?

The primary objective of the Livingston County Permit Guidebook is to compile information about the regulatory processes of Livingston County governmental departments into one document that will guide anyone seeking development assistance.
